Good News in Schools
Timber Wolf Lodge
An agreeable look filled the faces of students at Smith Elementary as
they walked into the Timber Wolf Lodge, the school's cafeteria, and took
in the beckoning new look that filled the room.
Fresh colors of blue paint, new school signage, and colorful wellness
educational material adorned the walls, and puffy-white clouds bearing
quotes from noted Americans were hanging from the ceiling when students
returned from Fall Break.
"We are the very first school in CCPS to have quotes by President Barack
Obama printed on clouds hanging from the ceiling in our cafeteria," said
Principal Thomasina Goodgame. Faculty, staff, and students were filled
with excitement to see our cafeteria make such a metamorphosis after
Fall Break."
"I thought Dr. Goodgame was sending us a message to help us do better in
school," said Yasmeen Robinson, a fourth grader, when she saw the
transformation.
While discussing the cafeteria's new appearance, Lisa Singley, assistant
coordinator of School Nutrition Services, said Nutrition Services
Director Audrey Hamilton has a vision to create wellness learning
laboratories in county school cafeterias.
"We presented our basic wellness package to Principal Goodgame, and to
our delight she loved it and wanted to further invest in our vision with
additional wellness education materials and school pride related
materials.
"The transformation from an institutional style cafeteria setting to
a warm and inviting, colorful, and thought provoking environment was
awe-inspiring. Our goal is to continue partnering with our principals
to promote wellness education and school pride in all schools," Singley
said.
Dr. Goodgame concluded: "Sometimes it's the small things that
promote school pride and enthusiasm among students that will encourage
them to want to come to school!"
