LA Lakers' Josh Powell
and Friends Visit
Riverdale HS for Presentation
Perseverance and Patience
Pays Off for Former
RHS Student and School
JONESBORO - Los Angeles Lakers
forward Josh Powell visited his alma mater, Riverdale High School, to
encourage students to stay focused on education. Powell spoke to the
students about working hard and paying attention in school to earn a
successful future. His visit included a $20,000 donation from his
foundation "21 Reasons to Give" for the school. Powell wears the number
21 on the court.
Principal Terry Young accepted
the generous donation which will be used to renovate and equip space for
a new computer lab in the Technology Building. Powell said he chose this
cause for his donation because, "I realize the importance of technology
in education."
Powell was accompanied by his
good friends and Laker teammates, point guard Derek Fisher, and shooting
guard Kobe Bryant. "Josh is my little brother," said Bryant, who
introduced Powell to the standing room only crowd of students, teachers,
administrators, and elected officials.
Superintendent Edmond T.
Heatley addressed the students saying, "Look where he (Powell) came
from and look at where he got to go. He wouldn't be where he is today,
if he did not pay attention."
"I once sat where you are
sitting, and I had the same dreams and goals that everyone here has,"
Powell said as he addressed the students. "I am blessed to have
accomplished many of those dreams and goals."
The high school honor graduate
said he wished the same for the students. He also cautioned them to be
mindful of the fact that it takes not only hard work but the right tools
and dedication to get their dreams and goals accomplished.
After the presentation, Powell
signed autographs for students and reminisced about old times with his
former teachers and administrators.
Ti'keem Cooper, a ninth-grader
at RHS, wants to play professional sports. What will he do different
after Powell's visit? "I'm going to pay attention in class," said
Cooper. "He (Powell) taught me what I need to do with my grades to be
successful." Cooper wants to be a professional baseball player.
