Does anyone have the contact information for the producers and
directors of American Idol? I know that they are not looking for group
talent, but I’m sure they’ll change their submission criteria when they
meet and hear Hawthorne Sounds!
Hawthorne Sounds are first graders in Ms. Lianna Thornhill’s class.
The group was formed when they completed a Science unit about sounds.
The young group of musician scientists was given the task of creating
home-made musical instruments. They had explicit instructions about
researching their instrument of choice before reporting to their home
labs. They had to use common household items such as Kleenex boxes,
paper towels, tissue tubes, rice, beans, etc. to create their user
friendly products.
Why research? Well, the first graders were to use the information to
create their instrument and write a paper which answered Essential
Questions: 1.) What causes your musical instrument to make sounds?
2.) What pitch (high or low) does your instrument produce? 3.) How do
you increase the volume (loud or soft) on your instrument?
Sounds simple? Well, it does if you are members of Ms. Thornhill’s
Hawthorne Sounds! ALL members of the group were eager participants as
they explained and demonstrated how they ‘literally made music!’ After
the class presentations, the hottest new group in the Science and music
industry came together to make sure I knew that they were going to
receive the highest rating of Excellent on the Rubric for Musical
Instruments! The assignment counted as a Science and Language Arts
grade and is aligned with the Georgia Performance Standards.
So, when you see this group in the near future, just remember that
you literally heard of them first in Ms. Lianna Thornhill’s first grade
class at Hawthorne Elementary! Can you hear them now?
