Lovejoy High
School Senior
A Winner
of the 2010 National Scholar of Horatio Alger Association of
Distinguished Americans

Alex LaPierre, a senior at Lovejoy High School, was
honored as one of the winners of the 2010 National Scholar of Horatio
Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. She was required to write
several essays and was requested to compare her life to a current member
of the association. The member she chose to write about was Willy Amos
of ‘Famous Amos Cookies’. Although there were 50,000 applicants, only
104 made it to Washington, D.C. to receive the full scholarship. Alex
was one of the fortunate applicants.
As a result of her win, Alex won a $20,000
scholarship to the school of her choice (some schools will match the
scholarship), a Dell laptop, and a free trip to Washington, D.C. from
April 7-11. During the trip to Washington, she was able to shake hands
with Dr. Condoleezza Rice, meet Tom Selleck and David Foster, dine at
the Ritz Carlton Hotel with members of the association, be honored in
the Constitution hall, lunch at the U.S. State Department in the Thomas
Jefferson room, and stand on the floor of the U.S. Supreme Court to be
honored. Congratulations to Lovejoy’s Alex LaPierre.
