Good News in Schools

Congratulations to Junior Deputy of the Year 2009-2010

Trysten Fowler

School: East Clayton Elementary

Teacher: Ervin

Trysten is pictured on the right with Daniel Penaloza of Lake City Elementary, who was chosen as runner up for the competition. Both Fowler and Penaloza received an additional trophy for their well-written essays.

East Clayton Elementary student Trysten Fowler was awarded the honor of Jr. Deputy of the Year by the Clayton County Sheriff Department at the Jr. Deputy Banquet held Monday, May 10, at Clayton International Park. Students attended the banquet with their parents, siblings, and teachers as they celebrated the 34 students who were nominated for Jr. Deputy of the Year from each school.

Sheriff Kemuel "Kem" Kimbrough Sr. was impressed with Fowler’s essay because he listed his many good character qualities.

Trysten wrote the following essay to answer the question: Why should I be Jr. Deputy of the Year?

I think that I should be Junior Deputy of the Year because I am helpful. I follow all of the rules. I stay on task. I keep my hands to myself. I come to school prepared. I use my inside voice. I don’t bully or tease anyone. I care for others. I am patient. I get my work done. I work well with others. I use positive language. I learn new things from Deputy Thomas. I am attentive. I take pride in all that I am responsible for. Everyday I come to school, I approach each day excited to learn something new. As I grow up, I promise to be a responsible citizen in my community. With the characteristics I have described, I hope I can meet my goals in life.

About the Junior Deputy Program

The Junior Deputy Program is offered by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office. The program offers fourth graders many opportunities to learn about the daily operations of the Sheriff's Office, the judicial system, law enforcement duties, and a variety of other topics including bullying in schools, effective conflict resolution, fire safety, and gun safety. The goal of the program is to influence youth to make prudent choices.
