First Year Standards
Standard 1:
Exchange simple spoken and written information in the target language,
incorporating cultural practices where appropriate. (MLI.1)
Standard 2:
Partially understand simple spoken and written language presented
through a variety of media in the target language. (MLI.2)
Standard 3:
Interpret verbal and non-verbal messages in the target language. (MLI.4)
Standard 4:
Present (individually and/or in groups) information orally and/or in
writing that contains a variety of vocabulary, phrases, and patterns.

Standard 5:
Develop an awareness of perspectives, practices, and products of the
cultures where the target language is spoken. (MLI.7)
Standard 6:
Use information acquired in the study of the target language and
information acquired in other subject areas to reinforce one another.

Standard 7:
Demonstrate an awareness of current events of the target culture(s).
(MLI.11)
Standard 8:
Demonstrate an understanding of the significance of culture through
comparisons between the target culture(s) and the students' own culture.
(MLI.9)
Standard 9:
Compare basic elements of the target language to the English language.
(MLI.10)
Standard 10:
Identify evidence of the the target language and culture(s) use for
recreational, educational, and occupational purposes, outside the
classroom. (MLI.12)
