Ophelia Burroughs was elected to Clayton County
Board of Education in November 2008 to fill the seat representing
District 5. In January 2009, Ms. Burroughs served as Board Vice-Chair
from January 2009 through December 2010.
Ophelia Burroughs is a graduate of Johnson C.
Smith University, Charlotte, North Carolina, where she earned a
bachelor's degree in English. She earned a master's degree in Education
from Pepperdine University.
As a military wife, her career moved to exciting
places. Her first position was in Dalzell, South Carolina at Ebenezer
High School as a French teacher for four years. The next assignment took
her to Las Vegas, Nevada, where she taught English at Jim Bridger Junior
High School for four years. One of the highlights in her career was an
assignment to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she spent four years teaching
English at Leilahua High School. She concluded her teaching career after
spending twenty-three great years as an English teacher at Jonesboro
High School.
She is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star,
the Riverdale Kiwanis Club, and the VFW Auxiliary Post 3650. She attends
Christian for Change Baptist Church in Riverdale. Her favorite quote is:
"When everyone else is wrong, and you are right all of the time, you
need to check yourself."
