Procedure for Applying to Substitute Teach

No offer of employment is possible unless you file a complete application.

Minimum Requirement: 2 years at an accredited college. 
This requires 60 earned semester hours of 90 earned quarter hours.

1. Complete an application.  Submit any explanations needed about your background or employment with the application.
2. Submit a copy of your highest level of education with the application. This can be either a copy of the diploma or transcript.
  NOTE: We do not accept transcripts printed from the Internet.
3. If you are a certified teacher, submit a copy of your current teaching certificate.
4. If you have taught in Georgia in the last 5 years, submit a copy of your last annual evaluation.
5. If your education was obtained outside the United States, transcripts and/or diplomas must be evaluated by a nationally recognized agency to show the equivalence in the United States.

Upon receipt of the application and necessary documents, the Human Resources Office will review the application.

NOTICE:  The Human Resources Office will ONLY notify you if your application is selected to complete the process to become a substitute teacher.  Due to the heavy volume of applicants, it is impossible to select everyone to become a substitute.  Applications are reviewed throughout the school year.  Orientations are held several times during the school year.
 

Requirements for Placement on the Substitute List for Clayton County Public Schools

The Georgia Board of Education has established a priority order of qualifications for substitute teachers in Grades K-12.  They are:

1. Possession of a valid Georgia teacher certificate
2. Possession of expired Georgia teacher certificate
NOTE: The above categories do not require the substitute Orientation attendance if an applicant has taught in Clayton County within the past five years.
3. Possession of a valid or expired out-of-state teaching certificate
4. Completion of a baccalaureate degree or higher
5. Completion of four years of post-secondary training beyond a high school diploma

a.

Completion of at least three years of post-secondary training beyond a high school diploma

b.

Completion of at least two years of post-secondary training beyond a high school diploma

Minimum Requirement: 2 years at an accredited college (60 earned credit hours)

Submit a completed application with all the necessary documents.  The application  will be reviewed at the Human Resources Office.  If your application is selected to complete the process, the Human Resources Office will notify you.  After you are notified, you will be required to do the following procedures:

A. FINGERPRINTING:
    You will be required to complete and pass a fingerprinting/background check that will be conducted only at the Human Resources Office. This will be done by appointment only. It will cost the applicant $45.00 cash only (exact cash).  We do not accept checks, debit, or credit cards.  This is non-refundable.
B. COMPLETE FORMS:
    You will be required to complete an I-9 form. You will need to provide identification for this form.  This will need to be either your passport or your driver’s license and social security card or birth certificate.  If you have an alien resident card, you will need to provide that as identification also.  You will also need to complete the G-4 and W-4 withholding forms.
C. TRAINING:
    Attend an orientation for substitute teaching.  Our Professional Learning Department provides this training at the Professional Learning Center located at 1087 Battle Creek Road Jonesboro, from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. with no late admittance.  Orientation is held several times throughout the school year.  In order to attend orientation your application must be selected.  You must have completed the fingerprinting and forms also.
D. AGE:
    Clayton County Public Schools does not discriminate on the basis of age.  Applicants who meet the established criteria for a position may be considered for employment.   However, we do require that you be at least 21 years old to substitute at the high school level.
    NOTE:

 Requirements to Remain on the List:

Clayton County Public Schools requires that you substitute at least three (3) days per semester during the school year.  There are two (2) semesters each school year.  If you do not reach the three-day requirement, your name will be removed from the substitute list at the end of the semester.

If you subbed three days or more in both semesters, you will receive a letter at the end of the school year inquiring if you want to remain on the list for the next school year.  We will need to receive that letter back in order to keep your name on the list.
