CCPS to Implement Rule on Student
Appearance
ES/MS Parent Survey Indicates Uniform Dress Preferred
(CORRECTED COPY)
A large portion of Clayton County Public Schools will have a new "look"
this year as the district begins implementing uniform dress for its
students.
The decision to move in this direction was based on a survey of parents
by elementary and middle school principals regarding the use of uniform
dress throughout the county. Returned surveys demonstrated a solid
majority in favor of uniform dress leading district administrators to
establish this concept throughout elementary school (grades
pre-kindergarten through five) and the first year of middle school
(grade six). Seven middle schools have opted to require uniform dress in
all grades (six through eight). (see list below)
According to studies across the nation, uniform dress lessen emphasis on
fashion, reduce the financial burden on families, and promotes learning,
school pride, and peer acceptance. Dr. John W. Thompson, Superintendent,
said, "It is our goal to promote student academic success, improve
school safety, and increase attendance."
Based on the survey, district elementary schools and the selected middle
schools will have a uniform dress rule consisting of polo style shirts,
pants or shorts, and skirts or jumpers. The clothing colors most often
chosen during the survey were khaki, navy, and white. As a result,
district uniform dress colors will consist of shirts in white and/or
school colors with khaki or navy pants, shorts or skirts. Samples of the
clothing will be placed on display in locations around the district.
At present, the district is completing work on the policy and
administrative rule that will govern uniform dress in the district.
The school district has contacted local retailers to advise them of the
uniform dress decision in an effort to prepare for the upcoming
back-to-school shopping season. For more information on uniform dress
colors for specific schools, visit the CCPS Web site or Channel 24 or
