Forest Park Middle Sponsors Haitian Relief Effort
CCPS students and staff prepare donations for delivery to Haiti
Jonesboro - Students and staff
at Forest Park Middle School are working quickly to provide aid to
victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The school will accept supplies and
sleeping bags for the disaster stricken country. Students are asked to
bring in supplies beginning Thursday, Jan. 14 until Friday, Jan. 22.
"All of the schools have
structural damage and need everything," according to Assistant Principal
Genghis Shakan. "We are accepting bottled water, bandages and other
over-the-counter medical supplies from the entire county." School
administrators are working with the Red Cross and the Haitian Alliance
to coordinate the relief effort. Principal Jamille Miller-Brown
initiated the project which will be overseen by Shakan.
Students are contributing in a
variety of ways. The class that brings the most bottled water will be
treated to a pizza party. Students in social studies teacher Janis
Edmondson's class will return to school with ideas for fundraisers. "The
students had so many ideas about ways to raise funds when we discussed
how they could help," said Edmondson. "They are bringing their ideas to
school tomorrow for homework."
Donations will be picked up by
the Haitian Alliance for delivery. Donors wishing to make monetary
contributions may contact the Red Cross or the Haitian Alliance online.
This will be the second
community service project for the school in two months. Last month
students sponsored a homeless family for the holidays and this month
their efforts will reach beyond the United States boundaries.
Forest Park Middle School is
located at 930 Finley Drive, Forest Park, GA, 30297. For additional
information contact Shakan at 404-362-3510.
