Q: What is a magnet school?

A: Magnet schools are built on the foundation of five pillars and are free public elementary and secondary schools of choice that are operated by school districts or a consortium of districts. Magnet schools have a focused theme and aligned curricula in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Fine and Performing Arts, International Baccalaureate, International Studies, MicroSociety, Career and Technical Education (CTE), World Languages (immersion and non-immersion) and many others. Magnet schools are typically more “hands on – minds on” and use an approach to learning that is inquiry or performance/project based. They use state, district, or Common Core standards in all subject areas, however, they are taught within the overall theme of the school. (Source: Magnet Schools of America www.magnet.edu)

Q: What types of magnet programs are offered in CCPS?

A: Clayton County Public Schools currently offers magnet programs in the following areas: Early College Academy; Fine Arts; Mathematics and Computer Science; STEM; Science, Technology, and Mathematics; and Spanish-English Immersion, Film & Media. A new program for Political Leadership has been added for the 2018-2019 school year. (Magnet Program Guide, pages 3-6)

Q: Where do I go to receive more information about the different magnet programs?

Q: I would like to apply for a school choice/magnet program, but my student is not a current CCPS student. How do I submit my application in Infinite Campus?

A. You will be required to create an account in the Infinite Campus system. Once created, you will be able to submit your application.

Q: I forgot to list a second choice on my application, or I want to change the school I am applying for. Is this allowed?

A. Once you submit an application, your submission is final. Please review all programs prior to submitting the application.

Q. When will I find out when my child's audition will take place?

A. The date for auditions will be determined by the school. Approved applicants will be notified via e-mail and/or U.S. Mail of the audition procedures and/or the time and date of the student audition.

Q. When will I find out about the lottery?

A. The lottery will be conducted during the week of March 5-9, 2018. Details about the Lottery Selection Process can be found on pages 11-12 of the School Choice Guide.

Q. When will my child be notified about a 2nd round audition?

A. Notifications for 2nd round auditions will begin in mid-March and will continue through the month of April. 

Q. I just heard there is a new program for Political Leadership. Where can I find out more information?

A. Jonesboro High School will open a Political Leadership program for the 2018-2019 school year. This program is open to rising 9th graders only. More information can be found here
