Application Procedure

Dear Applicant,

You cannot be considered for employment as a substitute unless you have applied to the Substitute Teacher job posting in our employment opportunities.  If there is not a Substitute Teacher job posting, then we are not hiring at that particular time.

Procedures to Apply for Substitute Teaching are:

Minimum Requirement: Bachelor Degree from an accredited college
 

1. Apply to the Substitute Teacher job posting in our vacancies and complete the application. Submit any explanations needed about your background or employment with the application.

2. References must be returned on the application in order to be reviewed for hire.  NOTE: At least one reference has to be returned from a recent supervisor. This supervisor needs to be included in your work history.

3. Be prepared to submit a copy of your highest level of education if you are contacted to be hired for substitute teaching. This can either be a copy of the diploma or transcript showing the degree statement. NOTE: We do NOT accept transcripts printed from the internet. PLEASE DO NOT SEND TRANSCRIPTS TO THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT.

4. If you are a certified teacher, be prepared to submit a copy of your current teaching certificate in lieu of transcripts.

5. If you have taught in Georgia in the last 5 years, be prepared to submit a copy of your last annual evaluation.

6. 
If your education was obtained outside the United States, transcripts and/or diplomas must be evaluated by a nationally recognized agency to show the equivalence in the United States. Refer to Georgia Professional Standards for a list of acceptable agencies.


As our needs arise to hire additional substitute teachers, the Human Resources Office will review the applications to select candidates to hire.

NOTICE: The Human Resources Office will ONLY notify you if your application is selected to complete the process to be hired as a substitute teacher.  This will be by email.

Due to the abundance of applicants, it is impossible to select everyone to become a substitute. Many applicants have the same qualifications. Applications are reviewed throughout the school year. Orientations are held several times during the school year.


 REQUIREMENTS FOR PLACEMENT ON THE SUBSTITUTE LIST FOR CLAYTON COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS


MINIMUM REQUIREMENT: 
Bachelor Degree from an accredited college

 

The Georgia Board of Education has established a priority order of qualifications for substitute teachers in Grades K-12.  They are:

1. Possession of a valid Georgian teacher certificate

2. Possession of an expired Georgia teacher certificate

3. Possession of a valid or expired out-of-state teaching certificate

4. Completion of a baccalaureate degree or higher

Apply to the Substitute Teacher job posting and complete the application.  The application will be reviewed at the Human Resources Office.  If your application is selected to complete the process to be hired as a substitute, the Human Resource Office will notify you by email. 

If you are notified, you will be required to complete the following procedures:

A. FINGERPRINTING:
You will be required to complete and pass a fingerprinting/background check conducted at our Safety and Security Department.  This will be done by appointment only. It will cost the applicant $45.00 cash only. We do not accept checks, debit, or credit cards. This is non-refundable.

B. COMPLETE FORMS:
You will be required to complete an I-9 form. You will need to provide identification for this form. This will need to be either your valid passport or your driver's license and social security or birth certificate. If you have an alien resident card, you will need to provide that as identification also. You will also need to complete the G-4 and W-4 withholding forms.

C. TRAINING:
Attend our orientation for substitute teaching. Our Professional Learning Department provides this training at the S. Truett Cathy Professional Learning Center located at 1087 Battle Creek Road, Jonesboro, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. with no late admittance. Orientation is held several times during the school year. In order to attend orientation you must be invited. You must have completed the fingerprinting and forms also.

D. AGE
Clayton County Public Schools does not discriminate on the basis of age. Applicants who meet the established criteria for a position may be considered for employment. However, we do require that you be at least 21 years old to substitute at the high school level.

REQUIREMENTS TO REMAIN ON THE LIST

 

Once on the list, Clayton County Public Schools requires that you substitute at least ten (10) days per semester during the school year. There are two (2) semesters each school year. If you do not reach the ten-day requirement, your name will be removed from the substitute list at the end of the semester.

If you subbed ten days or more in both semesters, you will receive a letter at the end of the school year inquiring if you want to remain on the list for the next school year. We will need to receive that letter back in order to keep your name on the list.
