Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl
On Saturday, January 28, 2012, over 70 students competed in our district’s Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl (HRRB), hosted at Roberta T. Smith Elementary School. Student-participants in grades 4 - 8, "battled the books", and faced off in a quiz-bowl to answer questions from the 17 books nominated for the Georgia Book Awards (elementary) and the 20 Georgia Peach Teen Book Award Nominees (secondary). Student teams battled through 5 rounds of detail-oriented questions based on these books for a chance to advance to this week's regional competition at Clayton State University.
Arnold, Lee Street, Marshall, River's Edge, and Swint Elementary Schools fielded teams at the Elementary level, while Babb, Morrow, Mundy's Mill, Sequoyah, and Rex Mill competed for the Middle School honors. When the final scores were tallied, Rex Mill Middle School took the first place honors followed by runner-up, Sequoyah Middle School. A closely fought contest at the Elementary level yielded a tie between Arnold and E. J. Swint Schools. An exciting tie-breaking round earned first place honors for Swint over Arnold by a narrow margin of 20 points. The top two teams at both grade level divisions continue on to meet other Regional finalists at Clayton State University, this Saturday, February 4th at 9:00 am.
Congratulations to Swint Elementary School
and Rex Mill Middle School
