The Clayton County Social Studies Curriculum provides a variety of
experiences and learning opportunities for students which prepare them
to be active citizens of the United States and the world. On the
elementary level, students focus on history, geography and government.
In middle schools, students concentrate on the geography and history of
the world and the state of Georgia. In high school, students are
required to complete courses in geography, world history, United States
history, government, and economics. Advanced Placement and gifted
courses are offered for high school students who excel in the social
studies.
Students have opportunities for enrichment through
course electives and participation in programs such as Model U.N.,
Close-up, District Mock Trial, Valley Forge Program, Stock Market Game,
Renaissance Festival, social science fairs, essay contests and map
contests. Clayton County students achieve high placement in state
competitions such as the Governor's Honor's Program .
The single most important ingredient to a good education
is teachers who excel in their field. Clayton County social studies
teachers do this consistently. Since 1985, Clayton County teachers have
been chosen as Outstanding Social Studies Educators for the State of
Georgia. Teachers have also been finalists in the Georgia Economics
Teacher of the Year competition. Social studies teachers are recognized
throughout the state for conference presentations and subject area
knowledge. Teachers continue to lead the state in providing law
education to students by conducting law education workshops and mock
trial competitions. Several Clayton County social studies teachers have
been recognized as a State Law Related Educator of the Year. In
addition, Clayton County social studies teachers are knowledgeable users
of the computer, video laser disks, and other types of technology.
