The School Social Work Department is a division of support personnel within Student Services that collaborates with schools, families, and the community to remove barriers that impede student performance. School social workers serve as a link between the home, school, and community to ensure that students remain in school and graduate, reach their fullest academic potential, and grow socially and emotionally. Their graduate level training in social work enables them to understand and interpret the impact school, home and community has on children and youth. School social workers have expertise in many areas; including human growth and development, mental health, effects of family and environmental dynamics on the student, child abuse and neglect, and the procurement and development of community resources. Using ecological, developmental, and strengths perspectives as frameworks for practice, school social workers develop strategies and interventions to improve students' academic, social, and behavioral performance.
