School Social Work Department

Services

School social workers’ professional knowledge base is utilized to provide services that enhance the educational process for student achievement.  School social workers work collaboratively with members of the educational team to provide information on:

School Social Work Practice
Adolescent Development
Students with Disabilities
Students at Risk
Policies and Procedures that impact on families and children
Attendance Protocol
Substance Abuse Addiction
Program Development
Grant Writing and Review
Gang Prevention/Intervention

The school social worker integrates the above information to provide services to families, children and youth. Services provided are:

2. Prevention/Intervention Strategies

3. Mediation

4. Home Visits

5. Workshops, Trainings and In-services

6. Group Counseling

7. Agency Collaboration
8. Brief Solution Focused Individual Counseling

9. Program Development

10. Consultation

11. Crisis Intervention/Counseling

12. Community Outreach

13. School-Community Liaison

14. Identification, Development and Coordination of Resources

These services are utilized to help:

Students

  • Build self-esteem

  • Improve relationships with others

  • Develop decision-making skills

  • Remain in school and graduate

  • Improve school attendance

Parents

  • Actively and effectively participate in their children’s education

  • Understand their child's development and educational needs

  • Understand and access programs available to students with special needs

  • Utilize school and community resources effectively

  • Understand school system policies, services, and programs

Schools

  • Recognize factors that impact student's abilities to maximize their school experience and academic performance

  • Utilize resources in meeting the educational, social and emotional needs of the diverse student body

  • Facilitate communication to enhance parental and community involvement

Communities

  • Recognize school policies, programs and practices

  • Minimize environmental factors that inhibit learning

  • Develop resources that adequately meet the needs of students and families in partnership with schools
