Director's Welcome: 30
Years of Excellence – 2007
WORKTEC is celebrating 30 years of excellence during
2007. What began as the dream of one teacher who wanted to offer work
experience to her students, has grown to serve 800 individuals each
year. The WORKTEC staff is commemorating this milestone in a variety of
ways -- mostly by giving to the community. We filled shoeboxes with
personal care items as part of The United Way’s “From Our Hearts to
Yours” project for people who are homeless, entered a team in the March
of Dimes Walk America relay for the 13th year, and collected supplies
for the women of Securus House as a “30 Days of Giving” project. Lending
a hand to others so they may reach their potential continues to be at
the heart of WORKTEC.
As one hand reaches out to people with barriers who want
to work – the other extends to businesses that need entry level
employees who are well trained and dependable. We have expanded our
focus beyond evaluation, training and employment, to job retention and
promotion. This year, we offered a training summit for businesses and
the employment industry, with nationally known motivational speaker and
author Paul Clayton, titled “Job Retention: Helping Individuals Stay on
the Job and Become Successful.”
Coupled with a focus on job retention is our goal to
increase community-based work sites, which fills two work force needs:
work experience for our consumers and a business need for additional
part-time workers. Our Business Services Division continues to offer
quality supports and services to our Federal, State, commercial and
residential customers in the areas of Landscape Management Construction
and Irrigation Systems, Janitorial, Mailroom and Administrative
Services, while expanding employment options for people with
disabilities. Through these efforts and many years of successful
collaborations, we have built long-lasting relationships in the
community. If you are not a WORKTEC business partner, we invite you to
contact us and find out how you may become a part of our success story.
As you explore our web site, we hope you will take notice of our updated
mission, vision, and values (see the appropriate tab above.)
As we look ahead to the next decade, we continue to
explore additional ways to reach businesses and assist them in meeting
their work force and service needs, increase funding for our programs,
and search for new ways to increase employment opportunities. This will
be an ongoing process to accommodate a fast-paced, changing business
world.
We appreciate your visit to our web site. We hope that
you will register on our guest page and address any comments related to
our changing structure or other comments by emailing them to our
