Parents and Community AI Guidance

Why We’re Talking About AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool that’s changing how we live and learn. In Clayton County Public Schools (CCPS), we’re using AI to help students succeed, make schools run better, and prepare everyone for the future. But we’re also making sure it’s done in a safe, fair, and respectful way that follows the law and protects your child’s privacy.

What Is AI?

AI is a kind of technology that helps machines or software think and make decisions like humans. AI can do things like:

● Help teachers personalize learning

● Translate languages

● Help with scheduling and grading

● Find patterns in data to help schools improve

Our AI Goals at CCPS

We believe AI should help people—not replace them. Our goals include:

● Helping students learn in ways that work best for them

● Making school operations more efficient

● Teaching students, staff, and families what AI is and how to use it responsibly

● Making sure everyone has access to AI tools, regardless of background

How AI Helps in Schools

How We Plan to Use AI Safely and Responsibly

Our Promise: Safe and Fair Use of AIWe Will Make Sure AI Is:

Fair and Accessible for all students, including those with special needs

Safe and Private, following laws like FERPA, COPPA, and CIPA

Used with Human Oversight, so people make the final decisions

Ethical, used in honest and transparent ways

Taught Well, so students and staff know how to use AI wisely

Open to Feedback, especially from families and the community

How We Protect Your Child’s Privacy

● We never use AI tools that don’t follow privacy laws

● We only approve tools that meet our strict safety standards

● Student data will not be shared or collected without permission

● Students only use district-approved, age-appropriate AI applications that support learning

What’s Next for Parents and Families

● We’ll offer training sessions and workshops to help you understand how AI works in school

● You’ll be able to give feedback through meetings and online surveys

● We’ll keep you informed as things change and grow

In Closing

CCPS wants to use AI to help students succeed, not to replace teachers or staff. We’re focused on safety, fairness, and transparency. Together, we can help students prepare for a future where AI is all around us—while keeping learning human at the heart of everything we do.

Okay Uses of AI:

● Helping teachers plan lessons

● Translating languages for students

● Supporting students with disabilities

● Creating personalized learning paths

Not Okay Uses

● AI writing assignments for students

● Using AI to grade or discipline students without a teacher’s input

● Collecting personal data without permission

Use Case Scenario #1

  • Scenario Description: A 4th grade student is struggling to complete homework for math class. A parent suggests the student use the AI Study Companion on the parent’s phone to take photos of the math problems and write the answers on the homework.
  • Acceptability: Unacceptable
  • Explanation: This scenario violates the guidelines in the Clayton County Public Schools AI Position Statement, which prohibits AI-generated student work submitted as original. The use of AI to complete homework compromises academic integrity and bypasses the development of independent problem-solving skills, crucial for student learning.
  • CCPS AI Position Statement Bullet: "AI-generated student work submitted as original."

Use Case Scenario #2

  • Scenario Description: A student finished reading Charlotte’s Web and is challenged with creating a book cover and writing a paragraph that explains a part of the story that the book cover represents. A parent suggests the student go to the CCPS Portal and use a district app's AI image generator to create an image based on the student’s description of the image. The student credits Canva for supporting the creation of the book cover image.
  • Acceptability: Acceptable
  • Explanation: This use of AI aligns with the Clayton County Public Schools AI Position Statement, which supports AI-assisted lesson planning and content creation. It enhances educational engagement by aiding in lesson preparation, thereby supporting teachers without replacing their critical educational functions.

CCPS AI Position Statement Bullet: "AI-assisted lesson planning and content creation."

Use Case Scenario #3

  • Scenario Description: "A student is preparing for his upcoming math test. They input some practice problems into an AI-powered learning platform that provides step-by-step explanations. He uses the tool to understand difficult concepts and applies what he learns to solve new problems on their own."
  • Acceptability: Acceptable
  • Explanation: This scenario aligns well with the Clayton County Public Schools AI Position Statement, which supports the use of AI tools to enhance educational accessibility and deepen understanding for students. The AI-powered learning platform aids the student in mastering challenging concepts through guided instruction, enabling independent problem-solving. This responsible application of AI leverages technology to support individual learning without replacing the educational role of teachers, adhering to the district's vision of using AI to enhance, rather than replace, human elements of education.
  • CCPS AI Position Statement Bullet: "AI tools will support personalized instruction by adapting content to students’ needs. Equitable and Inclusive Access – AI tools will be accessible to all students and designed to bridge technological disparities."
