Completion of the first Moreland University TeachNOW and New Teacher Induction (NTI)
The Department of Exceptional Students (DES) remains committed to ensuring that highly qualified special education teachers lead every classroom. Through strategic partnerships and targeted initiatives, we continue to support educators on their journey toward certification and successful classroom integration.
This past year, 23 candidates completed their certification requirements through Moreland University as part of a district-supported initiative to address the ongoing teacher shortage. By fully funding this opportunity, the district removed financial barriers and provided aspiring special education teachers with a high-quality, accessible pathway to certification.
In addition, 15 New Teacher Induction (NTI) candidates completed 8 months of intensive training during the 2024–25 school year. This marks the third consecutive year DES has partnered with Metro RESA to implement the NTI program, equipping new educators with the tools and support needed to thrive in their roles.
These initiatives are having a significant and positive impact across our schools. By providing fully funded certification opportunities through Moreland University and ongoing support through the New Teacher Induction (NTI) program, schools are now seeing an increase in the number of fully certified and better-prepared special education teachers.
This directly translates to more consistent, high-quality instruction and improved support for students with disabilities. Teachers entering the classroom through these programs report feeling more confident, equipped, and connected to a professional community. Principals and instructional leaders have also noted reduced teacher turnover and increased instructional effectiveness, especially in high-need areas.
Ultimately, these efforts are helping to close instructional gaps, promote equity, and ensure that all students, regardless of ability, receive the specialized support they need to succeed.
