Academic Advisement
Academic Advisement for High School Students
Academic advisement is a critical component of the high school counseling program and supports students in planning, monitoring, and achieving their academic goals. Through structured advisement, students receive guidance to ensure they remain on track for graduation while preparing for their postsecondary plans.
Professional school counselors collaborate with students, families, and school staff to help students make informed decisions about course selection, academic pathways, and future opportunities.
Four-Year Graduation Planning
School counselors assist students in developing and maintaining a four-year graduation plan aligned with Georgia graduation requirements and the student’s postsecondary goals. During annual advisement sessions, counselors review student progress, discuss course options, and ensure students remain on track for graduation.
Topics addressed during advisement include:
-
Graduation requirements
-
Course selection and scheduling
-
Career pathway alignment
-
Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and accelerated learning opportunities
-
Dual Enrollment options
-
Credit recovery and academic support
Monitoring Academic Progress
Counselors regularly review student academic progress to identify students who may need additional support. By utilizing student data, counselors work with teachers and administrators to develop strategies that help students stay on track academically.
Academic progress monitoring may include:
-
Grade and credit review
-
Attendance monitoring
-
Academic intervention planning
-
Credit recovery options
-
Progress check-ins with students and families
Course Selection and Pathway Exploration
Academic advisement helps students explore courses that align with their strengths, interests, and future goals. Counselors provide guidance on selecting courses that support both graduation requirements and career pathway development.
Students may explore opportunities such as:
-
Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) pathways
-
Advanced Placement (AP) coursework
-
Dual Enrollment programs
-
Work-based learning opportunities
Individual Student Planning
Through Individual Student Planning, counselors guide students in setting academic goals and identifying the steps needed to achieve them. Advisement meetings allow students to reflect on their progress and adjust their plans as their interests and goals evolve.
Partnering with Families
Families play an important role in student success. School counselors encourage families to participate in the academic planning process and provide resources to help parents understand graduation requirements, course options, and postsecondary pathways.
