Here's What's Happening
Clayton County Public Schools (CCPS) proudly hosted the second annual Helen Ruffin Picturebook Reading Bowl at M.D. Roberts Middle School of the Arts, celebrating young readers from across the district. This event continues to foster a love for literacy among elementary students, encouraging them to dive into engaging and thoughtful stories. While this is the eighth annual picturebook reading competition held within CCPS, 2023 was the first year that the organizers of the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl have included the picturebook (kindergarten through 3rd grade competition) as part of its offerings.
Following the same format at the annual Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl, 26 CCPS Elementary Schools teams competed using quizzing buzzers to answer questions about the twenty picturebooks nominated for the Georgia Picturebook Award. As the six-round standard competition and additional tiebreaker round concluded, each student received a free book to add to their home library before gathering in the gymnasium to participate in a dance party before announcing winning teams and closing remarks. Additionally, students had the opportunity to cast ballots for the Georgia Picturebook Award by voting for their favorite book among the 20 nominated titles.
Winners of the 2024 Helen Ruffin Picturebook Reading Bowl are as follows:
-
E.J. Swint Elementary - 1st place
-
Tara Elementary School- 2nd place
-
E. W. Oliver Elementary School - 3rd place
